about

It's been nearly two years since the release of the last Autopsy compilation, and Volume IV is now upon us. As seen in previous volumes, the Autopsy series continues to showcase the work of musicians associated with the Peacock Window label/aesthetic.

Continuing the tradition, House Of The Lie opens volume IV with another strange musical concoction. The track begins in tense fashion, and only ratchets that anxiety further upwards as it expands towards its conclusion. What begins as something slightly catchy and ear worm-y soon transforms into layers of odd, anomalous sounds that will have the listener questioning how these sounds were made (and are they human)? Eventually, the track boils over into an overcast void of mild feedback and claustrophobic drone before devolving back into more familiar musical territory. A real trip of brooding and tense horror ambient that could be the inner soundtrack to the mental disturbances and frightful action of an individual we'd rather not come face-to-face with.

Sandwiched in the middle is the wonderfully quirky and eerie sounds of friend and fellow musical conspirator, Facetoucher. "The Dead Air" delivers on its title and is the perfect follow-up to the previous track as it offers up wave after wave of brooding atmosphere and ominous tones. A heavy miasmal aura reigns over the proceedings. Much like House Of The Lie's opening track "Charlotte Haze", it builds itself up into a playful yet suffocating spirit as the mind and ear is pulled hither and thither by bizarre chitterings and explosive sounds that won't stand still. In fact, the air feels anything but dead, as it is alive with menace and a mischievous clangor.

Once again, this volume of sounds follows tradition and sees another ambient addition by musician Cody Drasser closing out this installation. "Radar Dust" rides out this volume to the end by presenting another musical vision of a science fiction nightmare. Loosely inspired by author Brian Evenson's short story "The Dust" (itself inspired by the science fiction film "Outland"), it is a vision of abandoned, off-world facilities, a desperate beacon that searches for help, paranoia, suspicious deaths and a rescue mission that never arrives."Radar Dust" takes a turn from the overt and overwhelming and delivers something much more subdued and dismayed (but no less distressing). A slow burner track that creeps and crawls. It's time to start rationing out the oxygen and water, my friends. Help may never reach us in time. Our fates are already sealed.

As a final note about this release, it's curious how each of these three tracks was created by musical friends in isolation from one another, and yet they each exhibit curious and uncanny parallels in their presentation. It's as if these songs were all made for one another, and somehow, against all odds in this terrifying and vast universe, found one another to latch on to. Truly spooky action at a distance.
