about

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Caulbearer's debut album "Haunts", we've decided to release the individual tracks that the duo have worked on for various compilations over the years. These tracks have not appeared on any albums and in most cases were exclusive, never-heard-before songs that were created specifically for these compilations.

While the individual songs have little in common with each other, thematically speaking, we feel that they retain a basic sense of connection due to the sonic palette that the group has been known to work with since its inception. For instance, "I Remember Everything" and "Unforgiven Crimes" were created during and directly after the "Haunts" creative sessions, and could easily have appeared on that album. In a word, those two songs retain a certain aesthetic that we were enamored with during the first couple of years of activity.

Later, we worked on 'Sometimes My Arms Bend Back" for a digital-nly compilation inspired by the work of David Lynch on the Twin Peaks television series. The title is a direct nod to a scene in the show. Being that the duo had not collaborated on new material in a few years at that point, it represents newer musical territory for the group. Of course, certain aspects of Caulbearer's sound since inception are evident here as well.

"Storm Chants" is even further evidence of new sonic territory for the band as the track sees the group toying with the same sort of ambient noise they've become known for, but also incorporating field recordings and audio samples into the fold. These particular field recordings were captured by Cody during an excursion into the Tibetan Plateau and visitations to various holy sites and ceremonies.

"Velvet Tombs" was thrown together some forgotten sounds from sessions that occurred (most likely we think) during creative sessions both during and shortly after the "Haunts" sessions. But once again, newer sounds and software savvy are incorporated into the mix. This track is perhaps the most eclectic of the bunch. An earlier version of "Velvet Tombs" has also been included here to round things off. It's the version used right before the final version was created (and may or may not be the preferred version of the duo!)

The songs are in order of creation/release date and can track the various styles and sounds that the group had been experimenting with at the time. To the best of our knowledge, these tracks appeared here:

1) I Remember Everything. Released December 31st, 2012 - descendresalacave.bandcamp.com/album/transmissions-from-the-heart-of-darkness-part-i-a-noise-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel

2) Unforgiven Crimes. Released February 8th, 2014 - peacockwindowrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/peacock-window-recordings-2014-sampler

3) Sometimes My Arms Bend Back. Released May 30th, 2018 - indierockmag.bandcamp.com/album/irmxtp-part-xiv-red-room-the-evil-in-these-woods

4) Storm Chants. Released December 27th, 2019 - bigcypressswamp.bandcamp.com/album/occult-realm

5) Velvet Tombs. This song was provided to the L. White label in anticipation of a Summer 2022 compilation appearance on physical media. The compilation has still yet to be released. No additional information about the release has been given to us at this time.

6) Velvet Tombs. Alternative Variation. Ostensibly, this version can be considered the "work-in-progress" form of the final track.
