"In annihilation anxieties, the basic danger involves a threat to psychic survival, experienced as a present menace or as an anticipation of an imminent catastrophe. The experience entails fantasies and/or feelings of helplessness in the face of inner and/or outer dangers which the person feels they cannot take protective or constructive actions.
The construct derives from the view of a traumatic situation where the person is faced with a quantity of stimulation that they cannot discharge or master, a failure of self-regulation.
Derivatives of underlying annihilation anxieties are: fears of being overwhelmed, destroyed, abandoned, mortified, mutilated, suffocated or drowned, of intolerable feeling states, losing mental/physical/bodily control, of going insane, dissolving, being absorbed, invaded or shattered, of exploding, melting, leaking out, evaporating or fading away."

Shrike Totem is Cody Drasser's (Caulbearer, Afterbirth) new project. Though Shrike Totem has made previous appearances on digital compilations, "Annihilation Anxiety" offers itself up as the debut album.
With Shrike Totem, the approach, attitude and methodology was such that a new moniker was needed for the material Cody found himself working on at the onset of the global pandemic and subsequent lock down. Created with an emphasis on more raw, less processed/worked over sounds, and using only a simple setup of keyboards and effects pedals, Cody layered keyboards loops together with samples from various online sources to create entirely new and often unplanned musical eruptions. Small musical vignettes of an odd and crudely organic began to manifest, stitching themselves together to become much larger works of sound.
While this new project and debut album manifest many of the sounds and genres expected of Cody's previous work - drone and spacey dark ambient make up the bulk of "Annihilation Anxiety I" - the Shrike Totem material as it is presented here has a heavier nod towards ambient industrial and musique concrete as a result of the concepts and attitudes at work. "Annihilation Anxiety II" displays those two aforementioned genres quite prevalently as it moves from imagined scenes of domestic violence, hospital horrors, harsh industrial environments and music to films that never existed.
The end result is something less refined, more immediate, rougher/noisier in spots (and highly meditative/drone-like in others), that reflects Cody's mind state amid the ongoing pandemic with all of its uncertainty and feelings of anxiety, dread, stress and almost constant worry about what the future may or may not hold. "Annihilation Anxiety" is a musical/creative response to the Coronavirus Pandemic and its associated feelings and experiences.
